Warm-up: Active/Passive Voice - Ex.2 (worksheet in packet) ~ Rewrite sentences this time please.

Review Writing Goals

  • Note places where you need to make changes for this essay.

Check your essay for...
  •  MLA heading
  • Title is original, centered, and main words are capitalized (no bold, italics, or underline)
  • All paragraphs are indented
  • header with last name and page number (beginning on page 2)
  • "All quotes are in this format with period after the page number" (125). Except LONG quotes.

Tuesday, 12/10 ~ Finish Essay

Warm-up: Choose one exercise from the Grammar Bytes (chompchomp.com) website to practice. You may practice under any of these sections: Comma Splices, Fragments, Parallel Structure, or Word Choice. 

Today we will finish writing the rough draft of your essay.
  • There is a resource on Focus called  Conclusions that may be of help if you get stuck.
  • You will need to either type your essay on your i-pad in Pages or bring a printed copy tomorrow.
  • Tomorrow we peer edit!
HW: TYPED Rough draft of completed Essay - on i-pad or hard copy (20 pts.).
Warm-up: Practice with Confusing Words at http://www.chompchomp.com/exercises.htm.

*West will give credit for 3 TIED paragraphs done on the outline as you do the exercise.

Highlight Example Essay (on Focus) for:
  • TIED structure.
  • Elements of a Lit.Response Introduction
  • Do the Discussion sentences actually adress the topic AND thesis statements?

Make sure you include:

  • Title and author of our novel

Class Work Goal: Use the outline to complete all three body paragraphs using the TIED structure provided. Check your work to make sure that these body paragraphs actually prove the thesis.

Wednesday 12/4 ~ Find Quotes & Start Outline

Warm-up: Topic Sentence Practice

Writer's Tip: The Literary Present ~ Whenever you are writing about a novel or story, you always address the events of the story as if they are in the present tense.

Example: Even though Ralph is the elected leader of the boys, Jack is actually the superior leader because he hunts for food, gives them the feeling of protection, and unites them through hunting and the chant.

Thesis: Check your thesis feedback on Focus. Make any needed changes.


Quotes: Today, work to find at least two quotes to support each paragraph. Don't forget the page numbers!

HW: Transfer Thesis, topic sentences and quotes to the Outline. We will complete all three paragraphs on block day.

Example:
  • Error: Jane is tall, blonde, and with blue eyes. 
  • Correct: Jane is tall, blonde, and blue-eyed.
Items in a series:
  • Error: He asked me to return his bike and that I should lock it up. 
  • Correct:  He asked me to return his bike and to lock it up. OR He asked that I return his bike and that I lock it up.
Comparisons:
  •  Error: I like tennis better than to play indoor games. 
  •  Correct:  I like tennis better than indoor games.

  • Active Voice
  • Compound/Complex Sentences
  • Parallel Structure
  • Avoid Common Misused Words (to, two, too) (Their, they're, there)
HW: Choose an essay prompt & Complete your CAB thesis and topic sentences on the prewriting sheet.
