1. In this story Carlos (dad) lost his truck, lost the money he borrowed from his sister, and was deported. However, in the process of looking for the thief, he gained something that was very important. What
was it?

2. What are Carlos's important personality traits?

3. Carlos could be considered a man of great faith? In what way? Explain.

1. In spite of all the suffering Juana watches her mother go through, she eventually repeats her mother's actions. Is Juana's desire to find her father worthy of such a sacrifice? explain.

2. After Lupe participates in the "whipping", her life plummets after receiving no redemption from this violent ritual. Is her faith itself altered? Explain.  

3. Duality is a predominant theme in the book. Besides Juana, are there any other characters who develop different identities? What characters resemble one another, especially in terms of what they mean to Juana/Adelina?
