Familiarize ourselves with some of the vocabulary found in Chp. 1. 
  • billy-o - British term for hard, strongly 
  • gibbering - to chatter unintelligibly 
  • Mevrou - Mrs.
  • lowveld - grassland, 500-2000 feet above sea level.
  • Zulu - largest ethnic group in South Africa (10-11 million)
  • Afrikaans - third-most-spoken language in South Africa. Originated from Dutch settlers.
  • Boers - Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer. Identifies the Dutch settlers in South Africa.
  • Rooinecks - racial slur used by the Dutch when referring to the English. Dutch version of  redneck.
  • kaffir - used to refer to a black person. Became offensive during apartheid.
  • indaba mat - indaba is an African word meaning gathering.
  • Zululand - northeastern section of South Africa.
  • Shangaan - a tribe of people in South Africa.
  • kraal - enclosure for cattle.

Directions: Revise any run-on sentences using the method of revision suggested in brackets.

Example: Orville had been obsessed with his weight as a teenager, he rarely ate anything sweet. (Restructure the sentence)
New: Because Orville had been obsessed with his weight as a teenager, he rarely ate anything sweet.


  1. The city had one public swimming pool, it stayed packed with children all summer long. (Restructure the sentence)
  2.  The building is being renovated, therefore at times we have no heat, water, electricity. (Use a comma and coordinating conjunction)
  3. The view was not what the travel agent had described, where were the rolling hills and the shimmering rivers? (Make two sentences)
  4. All those gnarled equations looked like toxic insects, maybe I was going to have to rethink my major. (Use a semicolon)
  5. The city government had good reason to fear the major earth quake, most of the business district was built on landfill. (use a semicolon)

2. Americans have come to fear the Zyka virus. Because it is transmitted by the common mosquito.
3. Angie is suffering from dentophobia. A fear of dentists.
4. In the iPad training session, Mrs. West explained how to target students who cheat. Also how to send these cheaters an instant message which reads, "Got ya!"
5. If Jordan doesn't get his way, he has a complete melt down. For example, lying on the floor kicking his feet or slamming his fists and then finally slamming his head on the floor.

FYI: Fragment QUIZ on Block Day next week.

ALLUSION: A casual reference in literature to a person, place, event, or another passage of literature, often without explicit identification. Allusions can originate in mythology, biblical references, historical events, legends, geography, or earlier literary works. Authors often use allusion to establish a tone, create an implied association.

 Why would each of these companies have used the icon/name from mythology? Why is it beneficial to have allusions to Greek/Roman mythology in a company's branding or name?

Activity: Myths Retold
  • You will be assigned a group and a myth. It is your job to teach the myth, but there is one trick... It must be set in today's world. Use the characters, moral and plot from your myth, but with a modern day flare.
  • What is required?
    • Due block day! Presentations must be no more than 8 minutes.
    • A member of your group must give a brief summary of your original myth.
    • You and your group members must engage the audience in a way that they will definitely remember the myth you've taught them. 
    • Think, how can I make my story entertaining and visual enough to get people to pay attention and remember what I've taught? 
    • Grade: 20 pts. based on creativity (5), clarity (5), detail (5), and individual effort (5). 
~Work with your group members to creatively retell these old myths. Final product should be no more than 8 minutes. Due block day!
