Grammar ~ Subject Verb Agreement

The 10 Commandments of Subject Verb Agreement

Here are the first five:

1. Make the verb agree with its subject, not with a word that comes in between.
Ex. The number of cigarettes he smokes daily ________ him to cough uncontrollably. (cause, causes)

2. Treat most subjects joined with and as plural.
Ex. Carson's natural ability and fierce competitiveness ________ led to a college scholarship. (have, has)

3. With subjects joined with or or nor, make the verb agree with the part of the subject nearer to the verb.
Ex.  If the student or the teacher ________ out of dress code, call the office immediately. (is, are)

4.  Treat most indefinite pronouns as singular.
Ex.  Everyone on the team ________ the coach. (love, loves)

5.  Treat collective nouns as singular unless the meaning is clearly plural.
Ex.  The school board ________ once a month. (meet, meets)
