Grammar - Pronoun Antecedent Agreement
EQ: What is an indefinite pronoun?

Three things to consider when there is a disagreement between indefinite pronouns and the other pronoun in the sentence:
  1. Replace the plural pronoun with he or she. Use this sparingly.
  2. Make the antecedent plural.
  3. Rewrite the sentence so there are no problems with agreement. 
When someone is texting, they are not  paying attention to the road.


                                         

                                            When someone is texting, he or she is not paying attention to the road.


                                            When drivers are texting, they are not paying attention to the road.
                                                                          
                               A driver who is texting, is not paying attention to the road. 

Practice - Fix the following sentences using one of the three methods mentioned above.

1.Every presidential candidate must appeal to a wide variety of voters if they want to win the election.

2.Sam lent his bike to someone who allowed their friend to use it.

3.Why should anyone learn a second language? One reason is to sharpen their minds.
