You must pay attention to those pesky indefinite pronouns!
What is an indefinite pronoun?    They refer to nonspecific persons or things.
The PROBLEM is.... you might be tempted to treat them as plural. They must be considered SINGULAR!!

The following sentences did not heed the warning. How do we fix them?

  1.  In my yoga class everyone performs at their own level.
  2.  Each of the teams had their mascot at the game.
  3.  Everybody in the girls' dorm has done their laundry.
What about collective nouns? (jury, committee, family, audience, class, team, couple)
Treat them as singular, however, if the members function as individuals, then treat them as plural. Example:
  •  The jury has reached its decision. (as a group, singular pronoun)
  •  The jury signed their names on the document. (as individuals, plural pronoun)
Here's a no-brainer - Compound antecedents connected by and treat as plural. Example:
  • Catherine and Taylor finished their project early.
This might sound familiar - Compound antecedents connected by or or nor, either...or or neither ...nor make the pronoun agree with the nearest antecedent.
  • Either Jake or Dave should receive candy for his great work.
Now take all you know about pronoun antecedent agreement and practice.
