Hey sophomores!
Oh my gosh! Your time is ticking! Monday is the big day and you should be nearing the end of My Sister's Keeper.
I'm wondering if you noticed that Sara’s chapters take place almost entirely in the past. What is the
significance of this? Why do you think Picoult chose to write Sara's chapters in this way?
I think that Pickoult chose to have most of Sara's chapters in the past so that she can fill in the blanks of the story. I also think that Pickoult thought is was important to show what life was like in the past and not just focus in the future. I think that this is a very well written story because Pickoult did this in Sara's chapters because if she didn't, then I would always be wondering what it was like in the past years. This take on a story also gives the reader more of an understanding of the characters and such. He one thing that I would mostly wonder about if she didn't write this story this way is how Jesse became the trouble maker that he is.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I think that Sara's parts in the was taken place in the past to explain parts that were told in different case scenario.(fill in parts of the story). Since Picoult put Sara in the past she was able to use her to fill in parts of the story thats what makes it significant.
ReplyDeleteJodi Picoult is very wise when developing a character's life. I think the significance of Sara's chapters being almost entirely written in the past is that Sara is living in the past. She is stuck in the time of past memories when Kate was healthy. Throughout the book she is trying to regain that sense of happiness and security. She barely notices her kids growing up, because she is so focused on what used to be.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the reason that Sara's chapters were took place in the past is to show the readers the background of the story and tell then how the issues developed as time went by.
ReplyDeleteBefore Sara knew about Kate's sickness, the family was happy. But since she found a clover bruise on Kate's back, everything became worse. So, the beginning of the past is perfect, and Picoult may have wanted to show readers about this happiness. And it set a strong comparison between past and present.
What's more, Sara is more like living in the past. She was so stubborn that she was stuck in the past, she cares so much about Kate's health that she ignored others in the family. In her mind, Jesse and Anna are always little kids and didn't pay much attention to them. Picoult use the past to point this out.
In my opinion, I think first because Sara is the mum of Kate and Anna, and also she is one who make the decision. She lets Anna to be that designer kid. She did a lot for this family, she has her own way to deal with the questions. She is the one that really push the events forward. She lets the reader knows the emotion. She is not the best mum, but she is the most responsibility.
