• Journal 24: Ch.13 Final Reflection ~ Consider the way Elias Chacour approaches scriptures, the role of the church in society or even his way of facing personal loss, racial tension and inequality in his country. This biography is extremely honest in that Elias allows the reader to know all the places when he has doubted himself. What advice do you think Elias would give to you as a person who is still finding your path in life? How would he advise you to push past your personal doubts or adversity between you and your goals? Site his experiences as evidence for what you think he would advise.

HW: Journal 24 Chapter 12 TIED-IED paragraph response (this one needs two quotes). Turn it in on Monday hard copy (you may turn in a hand written copy as long as it can be detached from your journal). 

Choose one question to answer:

• The very title of Chapter 12, "Work, for the Night is Coming", implies there is a sense of urgency in the chapter. How does Chacour display this TONE of urgency in his writing of Chapter 12?
• We notice change in Elias in Chapter 11 and it seems these changes continue to evolve in Chapter 12. Does Elias, himself, have a sense of the changes he is undergoing? Give evidence form Chapter 12 to support your claim.
• Although they seem more urgent than ever, the metaphors, "bridges and walls," are used again in Chapter 12. How are the two still evident in this chapter?
• Chacour has wonderful word choice and extensive use of imagery and figurative language. What is the effect of the imagery you've noticed?

Journal 23: TIED Paragraph Notes

Topic Sentences	T: The topic sentences lets the reader know what your subject is and what you are going to prove.  Never use "I" or talk about the essay/paragraph in this sentence.
Introduce Evidence	I: After the topic sentence, you should introduce  the context of your evidence (or quote).
Evidence          (this could be a quote           or logical reasoning)	E: In a Literary Response essay (the type we are working on), this is the quote that demonstrates your point.
Discuss (aka commentary)	D: You must discuss how the evidence is important in proving your argument as stated in the Topic sentence or Thesis. (This element ties the paragraph into a circular unit in which the topic sentence is effectively proven with evidence and author commentary.)

Prompt: How would you describe the way Chacour deals with the Responsible? Is it wise?

Example TIED paragraph: 

Elias deals with the Responsible with psychological finesse from the start. When Elias writes about meeting the Responsible he explains, "Where I got the nerve I hardly knew, but I blurted, 'Let's pray together'," showing that he relied on spiritual methods to change the situation rather than his own logical reasoning (155). Chacour's seemingly illogical response reveals a deeper understanding of human nature that reason is not effective until extreme emotions have been disarmed.

Practice: Using the paragraph you wrote last night, perfect the structure to make sure that you include all four elements of a complete paragraph. Then trade and check with the person next to you.

• EQ: How can I incorporate quotes in a fluid way that uses the quote to build momentum rather than in a way that interrupts the text of my essay? 

TIE METHOD = Tag it, Introduce it, or Embed it.

TAG: Tag the context to the end of the quote.

• Example: "[Elias] blurted, 'Let's pray together'" when he met the defensive Responsible, because he knew that he could not reason with someone in such an emotional state (155). 

INTRODUCE: Introduce the context of the quote to lead into the text.

• Example: Elias shows his reliance on spiritual means to convince the Responsible when he prays rather than discusses: "Where I got the nerve I hardly knew, but I blurted, 'Let's pray together'" (155).

EMBED: Embed the quote within the context sentence.

• Example: When Elias writes about meeting the Responsible he explains, "Where I got the nerve I hardly knew, but I blurted, 'Let's pray together'," showing that he relied on spiritual methods to change the situation rather than his own logical reasoning (155). 

*Puctuation Notes: Notice in the Tag section that only part of the quote was used and that [Elias] was added for clarity. You may add words for clarity within a quote by using the brackets too. Also, notice that the introduced quote can use a colon because the first sentence before the colon is a complete sentence.

Practice: Journal 20B: Write a paragraph response to one of the three questions below. Please include a quote using the TIE method.

• How did Elias gain the authority to speak into the lives of people in town. 
• What word would you use to describe the way that Chacour deals with the Responsible throughout Ch.10? Is this the wisest way to deal with him? 
• Why do you believe Elias is willing to take such high social risks in his work with the people of Ibillin?
